Vintage Queen Anne Peach Teacup & Saucer – All Over Gold Chintz, Gilt Floral Spray Interior, Scalloped Rim, Bone China, England 1950s

A footed teacup and matching saucer on a soft peach ground, covered edge to edge in fine gold scrollwork — tight curls and dotted trails running across the cup and out to the saucer's scalloped rim. Inside the cup, on white, sits a single gilt spray of chrysanthemums and leaves. The rims wave, and the foot carries its own gold ring.

The all-over gold is the point of the piece. Patterns like this were sold as gold chintz, and the density is what separated them from the plainer banded wares beside them on the shelf: the scrollwork had to register cleanly across a curved surface without breaking, then be fired and burnished so it sat bright rather than dull. Look inside the cup and you find the second decision — a gilt floral spray on white, where most cups of this type were left blank. It gives you something to arrive at once the tea is gone. The peach ground beneath was sprayed rather than brushed, deepening toward the rim and fading out toward the foot, which is why the colour reads as light rather than flat.

Circa 1950s to 1960s. Both pieces carry the same crown mark — Queen Anne over BONE CHINA and ENGLAND — and both were made by Shore & Coggins of Longton, who used the name until the firm was absorbed in 1966. Cup and saucer match, so the pair left the factory together.

Longton, Staffordshire, and made largely for export. Coloured grounds worked in gold sold well in Canada and the United States in the two decades after the war, when a cup was expected to look like an occasion rather than a utensil — which is why sets like this surface far more often on this side of the Atlantic than in Britain.
