Vintage Royal Albert Tranquillity Saucer – Orphan Saucer, Pink Roses, Grey Scrollwork, Embossed Scalloped Rim, Bone China, England 1960s

A saucer on its own in Royal Albert's Tranquillity pattern. Clusters of pink roses sit among yellow-green leaves and small blue forget-me-nots, linked around the rim by grey scrollwork. The edge is moulded rather than plain — scallops, scrolls and small beads pressed into the blank itself — and finished with a gilt line. Offered without its cup.

The pattern's real interest is its restraint. Grey does the structural work here — the scrolls, the trailing sprays, the little beaded swags all sit in soft grey, and the pink and blue are allowed to be the only saturated colours on the piece. That was a deliberate turn for Royal Albert in the sixties, away from the fuller florals of the previous decade, and why this pattern still reads as quiet rather than busy. The relief at the rim was moulded into the blank before firing, so the scallops and beads are part of the body rather than applied afterwards; run a fingertip over them and you can feel the whole edge rise and fall. The gilding was brushed on last, following that moulded line.

Circa 1960s. The backstamp gives the pattern name outright — TRANQUILLITY beneath ROYAL ALBERT, Bone China and ENGLAND. Printing a pattern name in the mark was postwar practice, the grey-toned styling belongs to the sixties, and the wording "Bone China England" rather than "Made in England" narrows the range further still.

Longton, Staffordshire. Royal Albert built its name on roses, and by the 1960s was running dozens of named rose patterns at once, each with its own moulded blank and colourway so that collectors could tell them apart at a glance. That naming habit is useful now: because the pattern is written on the base, this saucer can be matched exactly to the setting it belongs with.
