Vintage Royal Ascot Yorkton Saskatchewan Souvenir Teacup & Saucer – Canada Coat of Arms, Prairie Map, Logan Drugs, Bone China, England 1950s

A souvenir teacup and saucer made for one prairie town. The cup carries the Canadian coat of arms on one side and a low yellow building banded YORKTON, SASK. on the other. The saucer is a map: Yorkton at centre, ringed by York Lake, Melville, Roblin and Langenburg, the Manitoba line down one edge, and a grain elevator and a bird drawn among the place names.

This was a commission, not a stock line. The base says so plainly — made in England exclusively for Logan Drugs Ltd of Yorkton — which means a druggist on the Saskatchewan prairie ordered bone china from a Staffordshire factory, supplied the local content, and sold the result over his own counter. That arrangement shaped the object. The map had to be redrawn small enough to fit a saucer while keeping the towns legible, so the lettering is fine and the roads reduced to dashes; the building on the cup is rendered flat and frontal, the way a business likes to see itself. The gilding is a simple line at rim and foot, because the point of the piece was the printing, not the ornament.

Circa 1950s to 1960s. The mark reads "Made in England," wording that came in after the 1920s, and the building on the cup shows the long horizontal window bands of postwar modernism rather than anything earlier in style. Cup and saucer carry the same mark and the same shape number, 127.

Yorkton, Saskatchewan, by way of England. Prairie towns bought this china by the crate at mid-century — arms for the country, a map for the district, a local firm's name on the base. The mark names the town, the province and the business that ordered it, fixing the piece to one place and one moment.
