Vintage Royal Grafton Purple Rose Creamer and Sugar Set – English Bone China Milk Jug & Open Sugar Bowl, Gilt Scalloped Rims, Cottagecore Tea Service, England 1950s

A pair of purple roses unfurls across two pieces of fine bone china — petals layered from deep claret violet at the centre out to a soft lavender at the edge, the way a rose looks when you cut it on the third morning and bring it inside. Around them, slim green leaves with grey-olive undertones gather at the base of each bloom; smaller buds and trailing sprays drift up the curved white bodies. A gold line traces the scalloped rim of the creamer's pinched spout and runs again along the open sugar bowl's wavy edge.

The set is a creamer (milk jug) and open sugar bowl — the two pieces every English tea service relies on once the cups are poured. The creamer is baluster-shaped, with a gently flared spout for pouring fresh cream, and an S-scroll handle finished in gilt at the join. The open sugar bowl echoes the same form in miniature — wider, lower, lid-less by design — so a small spoon can dip straight in for cubes or coarse sugar. Together they sit beside the teapot like a matched couple, made for the same table on the same afternoon.

Royal Grafton was founded by Albert Edward Jones in 1900 at the Grafton Works in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent — the same Staffordshire town that produced Aynsley, Royal Albert, and Coalport. Operating as A.B. Jones & Sons, the firm earned the "Royal Grafton" title in 1949 and entered its golden era through the 1950s and 1960s, known for hand-tinted floral transfers and gilded edges that placed it in direct conversation with Royal Albert and Aynsley. Royal Grafton was absorbed into the Wedgwood Group in 1972 and finally closed in the early 1990s — every piece marked "Royal Grafton Fine Bone China Made in England" is now a discontinued collectible.
