Vintage Greek Mythology Plate – Black & Gold, Satyr & Maenad Dionysus Scene, Greek Key Border, Decorative Wall Plate, Greece 1970s–80s

A black-ground decorative plate from Greece, made for the export and collector market sometime in the 1970s or 80s, painted in the most recognisable visual vocabulary of classical antiquity. At the centre, framed in a circular medallion: a satyr in a red chlamys raises a cup to a seated maenad, vine and grape coiling between them — the Dionysian scene that Greek decorators have been painting on pottery for two and a half thousand years. Around it, a band of gilt Greek-key meander punctuated with miniature Doric temples; around that, a procession-frieze of figures — gods, warriors, dancers — circling the plate; around that again, a wider outer frieze of more figures, twice the cast. Rim picked out in 22K gilt; the matt black ground absorbs the light around the figures and pushes the gold forward.

This is the kind of plate Greek decorators produced for the post-war tourist and collector market — exported through gift shops, airports, and antique dealers across Europe and North America from the 1960s into the 90s. The mark on the back is a small gold SK monogram in a circle, characteristic of one of the larger Greek decorative-china firms of the period (Kerafina, Sotirelis, or a contemporary). At 9.5 inches across, the plate is properly hangable — large enough to anchor a wall, ornate enough to do it alone.

A piece for the classical-mythology collector, for the maximalist / dark-academia interior, for the Mediterranean-styled gallery wall, or as a centerpiece for a black-and-gold cabinet display. Photographs beautifully against dark wood, white plaster, or alongside other black-ground decorative ware.
