Antique New Wharf Pottery Geneva Flow Blue Plate – Art Nouveau Cobalt Tulips, Semi-Porcelain Staffordshire England, Scalloped Rim, 1890s

A flow blue plate in the Geneva pattern — a rim wound with Art Nouveau tulips and trailing leaves in deep cobalt, softened at every edge into that misty, run-together blue, with a raised beaded border following the scalloped rim and a small blue rosette at the centre. About nine inches, English semi-porcelain.

The blur is the whole point. Potters dropped a volatile chloride into the kiln so the cobalt would flow under the glaze as it fired — the seams where the printed paper met vanish into it, and every tulip ends up with a bruised, watercoloured edge. Look at one bloom closely: the printed line is still there in the darkest centres, sharp as an etching, and everything outside it has drifted a millimetre or two into the white. The beaded rim was pressed into the clay before any of that, so the little raised dots sit up above the colour and catch light on their own.

The crown-and-knot mark underneath has flowed as well — Geneva · Semi-Porcelain · New Wharf Pottery · England, soft at every edge, the same blue behaving the same way on the back as on the front.

One honest note on condition: the well carries some fine cutlery scratching from use. Otherwise it has come through beautifully — the tulip border, the beaded rim and the central rosette all bright and complete, the glaze sound and the blue undimmed. Lovely on a wall or a stand, and still presentable at the table.
