Vintage Paragon Victoriana Rose Teapot – Pink Roses & Gold, Fine Bone China Royal Warrant, Fluted Baluster Shape, Stoke-on-Trent 1980s

A full-sized Paragon teapot in Victoriana Rose, complete with its original lid. The body is a baluster drawn into soft vertical flutes, the cover domed and finished with a small shell finial, the spout long and curving, the handle a tall S. Pink roses crowd the shoulder and the lid and scatter away toward the foot.

They are printed at half strength, so the flowers settle into the white rather than sitting upon it. The gilding was given the opposite treatment — brushed on generously, the handle sheeted along its whole length, the finial dipped, rim and foot each banded. Set the pot under a lamp and the handle lights the length of its curve.

Victoriana Rose was made for about ten years from 1981. Paragon itself had rather less time left than that: begun in 1903 as the Star China Company, it was taken into Royal Albert and the name retired in 1992. Anything wearing it belongs to a list that stopped growing more than thirty years ago.

The royal arms printed in red underneath are not decoration either. A warrant meant the firm genuinely supplied the royal household, and a pottery that held one put the fact on everything it sent out.

Teapots are the pieces that tend not to survive a service: the cups go into a cabinet while the pot stays on the table, gets filled, gets knocked, loses its lid. This one is whole, and the gold — which on this design always goes first at the handle, since it carries the most and is held the most — is still sheeted and bright, finial and rim with it. Handsome on a shelf, sound enough to pour from, and the piece that finishes a Victoriana Rose service.
