Vintage Royal Tudor Ware Fruit Plate – Strawberry & Blackberry Still Life, Hand-Brushed Crosshatch Ground, Gold Rim, England 1940s
A cluster of ripe strawberries, blackberries, a golden apple, and hazelnuts fills the centre of this plate, painted in rich, saturated colour against a background you won't find on any other piece — hand-brushed crosshatch strokes in green, yellow, and brown laid one over the other until the surface looks almost woven. Every plate decorated this way is unique; no two brushwork grounds are identical. The short, confident strokes overlap at different angles, creating a texture somewhere between rough linen and an impressionist canvas — a technique that was a signature of Barker Bros' Royal Tudor Ware line during the mid-twentieth century.
The fruit transfer is vivid and finely detailed — individual seeds dotting each strawberry, the purple-blue bloom on the blackberries, the glossy curve of each leaf, and the papery brown husk of each hazelnut. A gold rim frames the entire composition, catching light around the full circumference. The plate sits flat and displays beautifully on a stand or hung on a wall — equally at home in a country kitchen, a farmhouse dining room, or a gallery-style plate wall.
