Antique Royal Worcester Crown Ware Dinner Plate – Vitreous Hotel Body, Moulded Basketweave Rim, Hand Coloured Classical Urn, Made Pre 1930

A nine-inch dinner plate in Royal Worcester's vitreous earthenware, thick and opaque and surprisingly weighty for its size. This was the body the factory made for hotels, restaurants, messes, railway dining cars and shipping lines, where plates were expected to survive service rather than catch the light. Crown Ware, as the ribbon on the back calls it, was produced from about 1870 and discontinued in 1930, when a translucent porcelain oven body replaced it.

The decoration is more delicate than the body suggests. The rim is moulded rather than painted — alternating panels of basketweave and lattice pressed into the clay while it was still soft, so the pattern stands up under the glaze — and a fine cobalt line runs round the edge. Inside that, a black arcade of scalloped drops hangs from a second blue line, and four black-printed sprays of roses, wild roses and berries sit at the compass points of the rim, drawn as finely as book engraving and small enough that the individual stamens read.

At the centre stands a classical two-handled urn, printed in the same black line, with flowers trailing over its lip. These are the only coloured marks on the plate: red, magenta, blue and green, dabbed on by hand over the print. Transfer for the drawing, a brush for the highlights — the standard economy of good middle-market tableware a century ago, and the reason no two of these plates are quite identical.

Plates like this went out in long services to places where they were expected to be stacked, carried and knocked about daily, which is a good part of why one is still here a century later while the thin porcelain of the same years mostly is not.
