Antique Aynsley George VI & Queen Elizabeth Coronation Mug 1937 – British Empire Crests, Bone China, GR VI Cipher, Drum Shape, England
The reluctant king and his steadfast queen, side by side on fine Aynsley bone china — with the crests of a worldwide empire arrayed on the reverse.
Two oval portraits dominate the front: King George VI in military dress and Queen Elizabeth wearing the State Crown, framed against blue backgrounds and encircled by oak leaves, Tudor roses, and a fan of Union Jacks and Scottish standards. The Imperial Crown and the date 1937 sit above; below, a gold ribbon reads "Coronation" and "Long May They Reign." It's an image of reassurance — a new king projected with all the confidence the nation needed after the upheaval of abdication.
Turn the mug around and the design shifts from portraiture to cartography. "Empire on Which the Sun Never Sets" runs in gold lettering above six brightly coloured coats of arms — Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and the West Indies — linked by a golden rope, a sweeping visual claim of imperial reach in one of its final confident decades.
On the handle, the GR VI Royal Cipher beneath the crown — a small but telling detail that marks this as an officially styled commemorative. Made in Aynsley bone china, a step above the earthenware mugs that most potteries produced for the coronation, with a noticeably finer white body and crisper transfer printing. The green crown backstamp on the base confirms the maker.
