Vintage Aynsley Pink & Gold Footed Sweetmeat Compote – Hand-Tinted Rose, Gilt Scrollwork, Pedestal Bonbon Dish, Bone China, England 1950s
A small footed dessert compote from Aynsley — fine bone china finished in rose pink with elaborate gilt scrollwork around the rim and pedestal, and a central white well holding a hand-tinted cabbage rose bouquet (pink blooms, yellow buds, periwinkle forget-me-nots, soft green leaves). The shape is the Sèvres-revival bonbon or sweetmeat compote — a shallow bowl raised on a low pedestal foot — meant for chocolates, petit fours, mints, or small confections at the close of a meal, or set up empty as cabinet display.
Aynsley, founded 1775 in Longton, sits with Wedgwood, Royal Worcester, and Royal Doulton as the four pinnacle English bone-china houses. The firm's pink-and-gold cabinet line was issued through the mid-twentieth century in the Sèvres-revival register that English makers had carried since the late Victorian period — the same vocabulary that turns up on Royal Crown Derby Bloor pieces and on Coalport's cabinet ware. Pink as a ground colour is the less-common of Aynsley's cabinet palettes (white and pale green are more frequent), which puts the pink-ground variants slightly above the standard in collector pricing.
The compote sits as a natural companion to the Aynsley Hand-Tinted Cabbage Rose Teacup & Saucer already in this shop — same maker, same hand-tinted rose vocabulary, same era. A two-piece Aynsley vignette for an afternoon-tea table or a small vanity.
A piece for the Aynsley collector, for the afternoon-tea hostess, for the Sèvres-revival or grandmillennial interior, or as a Mother's Day / bridal-shower / wedding gift to a household that runs to pink-and-gold.
