Vintage Cherished Teddies First Communion Bear – Heaven Has Blessed This Day, Avon Exclusive 476919, My Prayer Book, Enesco Hillman 1999
AvailableThis little bear never sat on a shop shelf. Item 476919 — "Heaven Has Blessed This Day," Girl's First Communion — was made for Avon, which meant she reached homes one way: through the Avon lady, part of a door-to-door network millions strong, spreading her catalogue across a neighbour's kitchen table. Somewhere in the spring pages, beside the boy's version (476927), a godmother chose this one for a seven-year-old in white.
She wears the whole ceremony: puffed white dress with a ruffled collar, veil cap tied with a pink bow, and in her arms My Prayer Book, its title and cross picked out in gold with a red ribbon marker at the pages. On her sleeve, the pink gingham patch that signs every Cherished Teddy — a bear already loved a little threadbare.
Twenty-six years on, she has kept remarkably well: the white dress shows none of the yellowing that haunts pale resin — an oxidation no cleaning can reverse, and the first thing collectors check — and the gilt lettering is complete.
The base reads Reg. No. IIS6/589, ©1999 P. Hillman, Lic. Enesco Corp., 476919, with a handwritten adoption number and the bilingual Made in China / Fabriqué En Chine stamp that marks her as Canadian-market stock. She was sold here the first time around, and hasn't travelled far since.
For a First Communion gift with real provenance, the Avon-exclusive sub-collection, or beside Margy, this shop's other Avon bear, from the same catalogue years.
