Antique Edward VIII Coronation Mug 1937 – "The Coronation That Never Was," Nelson Ware, Royal Commemorative, England 1936

A mug made for a coronation that history cancelled. Edward VIII's portrait still sits here in full military regalia, waiting for a ceremony that was overtaken by one of the twentieth century's most dramatic love stories.

Produced in 1936 in anticipation of the coronation set for May 12th, 1937, this mug carries a vivid polychrome portrait of the young king framed by a laurel wreath, flanked by crossed Union Jacks, and crowned by the Imperial State Crown — lions rampant at the base, the date and title spelled out on a ribbon below. On the reverse, the ER VIII Royal Cipher — Edward's intertwined initials beneath the crown — sits within its own laurel wreath. Every detail speaks of confidence that this coronation would proceed as planned.

It didn't. Edward abdicated in December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, and the coronation date was reassigned to his brother George VI. The mugs, plates, and tins already manufactured became instant historical curiosities — artefacts of "The Coronation That Never Was." Collectors prize them precisely for this: they document a moment that was planned but erased, making them rarer in spirit than any standard royal commemorative.

Made by Nelson Ware (Elijah Cotton Ltd, Staffordshire) in the classic tapered mug form, with a cream-coloured earthenware body and fine gold rim line. Overall crazing is present and consistent with nearly ninety years of age — expected and accepted in this category of collecting.
