Antique W.H. Goss Three-Handled Loving Cup – Royal Crests & Tintern Abbey, Crested China, Victorian Era, England 1900s

Sold · archived in our gallery

A cup made to be shared — three handles, four coats of arms, and a century of English history wrapped around one small piece of Goss porcelain.

The three-handled loving cup (or tyg) is one of Goss's most iconic forms, descended from medieval communal drinking vessels passed between friends at feasts. This example carries four richly coloured heraldic transfers, each a different crest: the Royal Arms of England with its three golden lions; the full Arms of Queen Victoria with lion and unicorn supporters and the "Dieu et Mon Droit" motto; the shield of Tintern Abbey — the hauntingly beautiful ruined monastery on the Welsh border; and the English national arms within a Garter ring. Together they create a miniature tour of English and Welsh heritage.

Made in Goss's signature luminous white porcelain at their Stoke-on-Trent works during the late Victorian or Edwardian era, this cup bears the goshawk backstamp that collectors worldwide recognise instantly. Goss crested china was the souvenir of choice for an entire generation of British tourists — affordable, beautifully made, and endlessly varied. The three-handled form is among the most sought-after shapes, and the combination of royal and ecclesiastical crests makes this example particularly appealing.
