Vintage Maddock Royal Vitreous George V Silver Jubilee Mug – 1910–1935, Official Design, Union Jack, Gold Portrait, England 1935

Twenty-five years on the throne — through a world war, a pandemic, a general strike, and a global depression. This Silver Jubilee mug marks the moment in May 1935 when Britain paused to celebrate George V's quarter-century as king, less than a year before his death. Maddock & Sons produced it in their signature Royal Vitreous body — a dense, glass-hard semi-porcelain tougher than earthenware and heavier in the hand than bone china.

The front carries a gold portrait medallion of George V in profile, set against a pale blue ground and framed by a laurel wreath. The Imperial Crown sits above, flanked by four crossed flags — two Union Jacks and two Red Ensigns — their colours still vivid in red, white, and blue. Below the portrait, "1910" and "1935" anchor the composition, with a gold Tudor rose and foliage closing the base. A gold ribbon banner circles the rim, lettered "SILVER JUBILEE" and "GEORGE V AND QUEEN MARY" in capitals. Turn the mug and a "GM" monogram in a gold wreath marks the reverse — George and Mary, paired as they were for forty-two years of marriage.

The base carries two stamps: the Maddock & Sons Ltd "Royal Vitreous" circular mark, and the British Potters Manufacturers Federation "Official Design" seal with its Union Jack centre — a mark that certifies this as an approved commemorative design, not a freelance imitation. The straight-sided tankard shape with its ribbed base and scrolled handle is the classic form for Silver Jubilee distribution mugs — designed to be functional, durable, and produced at scale for a nation celebrating.
