Vintage Ridgway "Meadowsweet" Oval Platter – Blue & White Transferware, English Countryside Scene, Ironstone, England 1970s

A whole English village, captured in blue and white on a single platter. Ridgway's "Meadowsweet" is transferware storytelling at its best — hedgerows, a winding stream, thatched cottages, and a church tower rising above the treeline, all rendered in rich cobalt blue.

The scene unfolds across the entire oval surface with cinematic breadth: in the foreground, a rustic fence and tangled undergrowth give way to a gentle stream; the middle ground opens into rolling countryside dotted with farmhouses and village buildings; and in the distance, a church steeple anchors the skyline beneath towering trees whose branches frame the composition from above. The blue transfer ranges from deep, saturated cobalt in the foreground details to soft, hazy blue-grey in the far distance — a tonal shift that creates genuine depth and atmosphere, the kind of effect that makes you pause and look closer.

Made in Ridgway ironstone — heavier and more robust than bone china, with a satisfying solidity that makes it ideal for wall display. The oval format and generous proportions give this platter real presence on a wall or propped on a plate stand. Blue-and-white transferware has been a cornerstone of English country house style for over two centuries, and "Meadowsweet" is a particularly fine example — the pastoral scene is detailed enough to reward close inspection and romantic enough to set a mood from across the room.
