Vintage Royal Albert Periwinkle Plate – Blue Chintz Floral Border, Pink Rose Centre, Gilt Rim Bone China, Grandmillennial England 1950s

A dinner plate ringed in blue — a band of little five-petalled flowers and narrow leaves crowded right to the scalloped edge, so densely printed that it reads as a length of sprigged cotton rather than a border. The well is left almost bare: one small posy of pink roses at the centre, and a fine gold line running the rim.

Look closely at how the two halves are made. The blue border is a single-colour transfer, laid so the pattern meets almost invisibly at the joins, in the flat matte blue of a printed ground. The roses at the centre are a different job altogether — the pink has been washed on over the print, a green touched into the leaves, the palest shading where a petal turns, so the little bunch sits warm against all that cool blue. The gilt line at the edge is thin and even, still bright, with the softest thinning where a stack of plates would have rubbed.

Underneath, the crown mark reads Royal Albert · Bone China · England · Periwinkle. Chintz-style prints like this one — all-over sprigged, named after the Indian cottons that reached England in the 1600s — are collected in their own right, and the single-colour ones have a quieter charm than the busy multi-coloured versions.

The well carries light cutlery scratching from years of use. Ten and a quarter inches: a proper dinner plate, though it does just as well on a stand.
