Teacup & Saucer

Vintage Royal Winton Majestic Chintz Tea Trio – Black Ground, Cup Saucer and Square Plate, Grimwades, England 1930s–1940s

Poppies, cornflowers, and daisies packed edge to edge on a jet-black ground — Royal Winton's Majestic chintz, one of the factory's most dramatic all-over patterns. The black base pushes every petal forward: deep pinks, electric blues, bright yellows, and vivid greens glow against the dark field as if lit from inside. Where most chintz patterns float on white or cream, Majestic turns the contrast up — it reads more like stained glass than fabric.

This is a complete tea trio — cup, round saucer, and square side plate with softly clipped corners. The chintz transfer wraps every surface without a gap: outside the cup, across the handle, over both sides of the saucer and plate. Applying an all-over lithographic transfer to a curved cup body and angular handle was painstaking hand work — every fold and seam had to be smoothed by a decorator working freehand. Royal Winton perfected this technique in the 1930s, and their chintz wares became so sought-after that the factory is now synonymous with the style itself. A gold band traces each rim. The cup interior is left plain cream — a moment of quiet against the riot outside.
