Vintage Shelley Bramble Chintz Teacup and Saucer – Gold Transfer, Pink Interior, Gilt Handle and Foot, Green Enamel, Bone China, England 1950s
Blackberries and wild roses tangled across every surface in warm gold — Shelley's Bramble chintz, an all-over pattern that trades the usual riot of colour for something quieter: a single golden tone that makes the whole cup look like a botanical print illuminated in gilt. Each five-petal wild rose bloom carries a cluster of hand-dotted green enamel at its centre — tiny raised points you can feel under a fingertip, applied one by one after the transfer was fired. The blackberry clusters are built from dozens of individually printed gold dots mimicking each drupelet, and the vine leaves are cross-hatched with visible veining that fills every gap between flower and fruit.
The chintz wraps the cup from rim to foot and covers the saucer edge to edge, leaving no white visible on the outside. Inside is another story: a soft pink wash fills the cup interior, and a decorative border of pink flowers and gold scrollwork with fine dot detailing circles just below the rim — a hidden ribbon of colour visible only when you lift the cup to drink. The handle and foot ring are fully gilt — solid gold from end to end, heavy and lustrous against the warm gold-and-pink palette. This is not a gold line — it is a full gold surface, applied by a decorator working freehand across a curved form.
Made by Shelley — one of the most collectible names in English bone china, produced at their Foley Works in Longton, Staffordshire, from 1925 until 1966. Shelley's reputation rests on the quality of their bone china (thin, translucent, immaculately white) and the sheer range of their decoration. The company produced thousands of registered patterns and their chintz wares are among the most sought-after in the field. Every piece of Shelley is English-made, and every piece is now discontinued.
