Vintage Aynsley Yellow Floral Teacup and Saucer – Buttercup Exterior, Bouquet Interior, Swirl Shape, Gilt Trim, Fine Bone China, England 1950s
The outside is pure buttercup yellow — a single, unbroken colour that wraps the swirl-fluted body and floods the saucer, turning the whole set into something that belongs on a sunlit windowsill. Then you lift the cup. Inside, a bouquet of pink-veined blooms — part orchid, part azalea — opens against the white bone china, flanked by golden florets and dark green leaves. Around the inner rim, a delicate garland of small flowers circles the lip in pink, gold, and green, so the arrangement reads as two gardens: one at the bottom of the cup, one framing the view.
This two-part composition — bold exterior, secret interior — is the signature move of Aynsley's coloured teacups. The idea is theatrical: the saucer and cup exterior announce the piece from across a table, but the real decoration waits until someone picks it up to drink. The yellow is applied by hand spraying across the swirl fluting, giving the colour a slight depth in the grooves and a brighter sheen on the ridges. The floral transfers inside are finished with hand-painted colour.
Aynsley was founded in Longton, Staffordshire, in 1775 — one of the longest pedigrees in English bone china. The factory operated for over two centuries before closing in 2014, making every Aynsley piece a finished chapter. Yellow is among the most collected Aynsley colours, alongside cobalt blue and deep green, and the Swirl shape — with its spiralling ridges, scalloped rim, and gilded S-scroll handle — remains the form most associated with the brand.
