Vintage English Cobalt Blue & Gold Demitasse Cup & Saucer – Medallion Band, Pendant Drop Motif, Gilt Trim, Fine Bone China, England 1930s
The kind of cup that turns an espresso into a ceremony. Cobalt blue and gold have been the royal pairing in porcelain for three centuries, and this demitasse wears it with the confidence of a piece that knows its lineage.
A wide band of deep cobalt blue encircles the upper cup and saucer rim, overlaid with a chain of gilded medallions — each one a precise geometric rosette connected by fine gold beadwork. Below the band, delicate pendant drops in gold descend onto the white bone china body like the fringe of a jeweled necklace. The effect is architectural and rhythmic, recalling both Art Deco geometry and the lavish blue-and-gold tradition of 18th-century Sèvres porcelain.
At demitasse scale — roughly two-thirds the size of a standard teacup — this is purpose-built for espresso, Turkish coffee, or a small after-dinner pour. The proportions are precise: the cup sits neatly in the palm, the handle accommodates a thumb and one finger, and the saucer provides a generous surround for a biscuit or chocolate. Produced in England during the interwar years, when blue-and-gold sets were a staple of formal dining, this cup brings old-world elegance to a modern coffee ritual.

Coalport's “A.D. 1750” crown mark is decorative, not a date — the firm was founded c. 1795. The “Bone China” and “Made in England” wording points to a 20th-century piece.
