Vintage Elizabethan Anniversary Rose Series Moss Rose Mug – Fine Bone China, England, Cottagecore Pink Rose Cup 1970s
An Elizabethan bone-china mug from the Anniversary Rose Series — pattern Moss Rose — a deep-pink cabbage rose at the centre of the body with a smaller rosebud beside it and a sprig of green leaves trailing down. The body is fluted in vertical panels, the rim is gently scalloped, and a fine 22K gilt line runs around the lip. The handle is the small scrolled curl Elizabethan used through the late mid-century, with an inner gilt stroke that catches against the rest of the gilt rim.
Look closely at the rose itself. The cabbage rose is built up in printed layers — the outline first, then a mid-tone fill, then the highlights and shadows added in a finer printing pass — which is what gives the rose its dimensionality without the cost of full hand-painting. The rosebud beside it is painted in one less colour pass, the simpler treatment that always sits a rosebud at the supporting role in this kind of mid-century English cup vocabulary. On the underside, the maker has separated the print register from the gilt register cleanly: there is no overlap, no smudge, which is the sign of a careful printer rather than a rushed one.
The base mark reads in full: three small pink roses at the top, then Elizabethan / Fine Bone China / England in cursive script (red for the maker name, green for the bone-china line), then ANNIVERSARY ROSE SERIES and the sub-pattern name MOSS ROSE underneath. The Anniversary Rose Series was Elizabethan's 1960s–70s rose-themed line; each sub-pattern named after a traditional English garden rose variety — Moss Rose, Old English Rose, Tea Rose, Damask Rose among them. Moss Rose specifically refers to the nineteenth-century cottage-garden variety with the moss-textured calyx (the fuzzy bud-base that gave the variety its name) — a quietly literary choice for a tea / coffee mug name.
A mug for the Elizabethan / Anniversary Rose Series collector, for the cottagecore tea-and-coffee shelf, for the pink-rose-themed kitchen, or as a Mother's Day / bridal-shower / small thoughtful gift.
