Teacup & Saucer

Vintage Foley China Floral Spray Teacup and Saucer – Pink Roses, Cream Ground, Brown-Gold Foliage, Scalloped Rim, Bone China, England 1940s

Sold · archived in our gallery

A warm cream ground — not white, but the colour of old parchment — and against it, sprays of pink roses, blue forget-me-nots, and tiny orange blossoms held together by leaves in an unusual brown-gold tone, as if the foliage had already turned while the flowers kept blooming. The palette feels warmer and softer than the bright whites and greens of most English china.

The cup sits on a footed base with a gently flared body, its walls divided into subtle vertical panels. The scalloped rim is traced in gold, and the S-curve handle carries a gilt spine. The saucer mirrors the cup's scalloped edge and cream ground, with its own ring of floral sprays — the same pink roses, the same brown-gold leaves that give this set its distinctive character.

This is Foley China — the trade name of E. Brain & Co. Ltd, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. The Foley China Works was established in 1850 by William Robinson; Elijah Brain took over in 1885, and from 1903 the firm traded as E. Brain & Co. For sixty years they specialised in bone china tea ware of high quality. The backstamp reads "Foley China, Made in England" — the mark used from approximately 1930 to 1948, before the company added "1850 EB" to its branding. The factory closed in 1963, making every piece a discontinued collectible.

The base carries the maker's printed mark; the wording — especially “England” versus “Made in England” versus “Bone China” — together with any pattern or registration number are the main clues to its age.
