Vintage King Edward VIII Coronation Mug – Crowning That Never Was, Grafton China Barrel Shape, Abdication Memorabilia, England 1937

Available

The banner on this mug announces a coronation — May 12th, 1937 — that never took place. Edward VIII, whose stippled young portrait sits in the laurel wreath between two rampant lions, abdicated on 11 December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, 326 days into his reign, five months before his crowning. Britain's potteries had been printing his face onto souvenirs since the summer; when the throne changed hands, the warehouses simply sold on what they had made. Collectors have a name for the result: the Coronation That Never Was.

History added its own twist — the same date and the same Abbey served instead for the crowning of his brother, George VI. Souvenirs of 12 May 1937 therefore exist with two different kings on them, and this shop holds both: this mug for the coronation that never happened, and Paragon pieces for the one that did. Displayed together they tell the whole abdication crisis in china.

The mug itself is a handsome thing of its moment: barrel-shaped with a ribbed Art Deco handle lined in gold, Tudor roses, thistles and shamrocks around a Tudor crown, laurel bands at the rim. The sunburst backstamp — A.B.J. Grafton China, Made in England — is A.B. Jones & Sons of Longton in its pre-1949 years, before the firm became Royal Grafton; production pins itself to late 1936 by the abdication timeline.

For collectors of the abdication story, of royal what-ifs, and of the odd corners of history that only survive in objects like this one.
