Vintage King George V Silver Jubilee Beaker – Northumberland Schools Gift, Sepia Portraits Queen Mary, Lustre Rim, England May 1935

Available

No British monarch had ever celebrated a modern Silver Jubilee before 6 May 1935. As the old King rode through cheering London to St Paul's that morning, he offered one of the most quoted lines of his reign: "I am beginning to think they must really like me for myself." Eight months later he was gone, and the abdication drama began — a chain this shop can now lay out piece by piece: 1935 jubilee, 1936 accession, 1937 coronation.

This beaker is the schoolchild's share of that last summer. The reverse carries its commission in neat brown lettering: "Silver Jubilee" — Northumberland County Education Committee — May 6th 1935. England's northernmost county handed one to every schoolchild; some small hand in Hadrian's Wall country once held this one through the bonfires and street parties. The front bears sepia photographic portraits of Queen Mary in her pearls and King George in naval dress, laurel-wreathed beneath the crown with the Royal Standard and Union Jack, over the golden ribbon 1910–1935. The rim is silvered for the occasion — jubilee logic in lustre — now softly tarnished with age. Set it beside this shop's 1911 coronation beaker and the same couple bookend their whole reign, twenty-four years apart.

The base carries an impressed mould number, 2085, and no maker's stamp — the usual anonymity of municipal bulk orders, honestly noted. Ninety-one years old, no chips, no cracks.
