Vintage Royal Albert Country Scenes Primrose Hill Teacup and Saucer – Yellow Primrose, English Landscape, Montrose Shape, Bone China, England 1990s
An entire English countryside wraps around this cup — yellow primroses clustered along a country lane, white-walled cottages tucked behind hedgerows, evergreen trees framing a pale blue sky where a few birds drift overhead. This is not a pattern with flowers on a white background; it is a full landscape that covers every surface, cup and saucer alike, as if someone had taken a watercolour of a spring morning and pressed it onto bone china.
The design belongs to Royal Albert's Country Scenes series — six landscape patterns, each named for a different corner of the English countryside. Primrose Hill is the spring entry: yellow primroses, soft pink blooms along a pathway, green fields rolling toward a distant village. The colour palette runs from bright lemon-yellow through sage green and sky blue to warm cottage-brown, all printed with the kind of detail that rewards a second look — individual petals, bark texture on the trees, smoke rising from a chimney.
This is the Montrose shape — Royal Albert's signature wide-mouth cup with a scrolled handle and scalloped rim, every scallop traced in gold. The handle spine carries a gilt line, and the foot ring is banded in gold. Inside, the cup is plain white, so the landscape lives on the exterior and the saucer — pick the cup up and the full scene is revealed underneath.
Made by Royal Albert at their works in Longton, Staffordshire — one of the most collected names in English bone china. The Country Scenes series was produced in the 1990s during the final era of English manufacture. Every piece marked "Bone China England" is from domestic production and is now discontinued.
