Vintage Royal Albert Hand Painted Floral Bouquet Teacup & Saucer – Gold Basket Weave Border, Early Bone China Mark, England Art Deco 1930s

A Royal Albert bone-china teacup and saucer from the firm's earlier 1930s–40s window — a gold basket-weave border running around the rim, with a hand-painted floral bouquet held at the centre of cup and saucer. The basket-weave gilt is an acid-etched register — short vertical bars and horizontal cross-bars interlaced to imitate woven basketry, the gilt taking on light-to-dark variation across the band where the acid bit deeper in some passes than others. It is not a transfer print gold; the surface has the slight relief texture and the warmth of a multi-pass etched gilt finish, which is the technique English bone-china makers reserved for cabinet teaware rather than for daily use.

Sit with the bouquet in the centre of the cup and the painter's hand becomes visible. A dog rose at the heart, six pale-pink petals open flat with the central yellow stamens picked out one at a time; a cluster of small sky-blue forget-me-nots above; a yellow buttercup tucked to one side; a single violet-purple sweet pea opening at the upper right; a sprig of wheat behind; and at the base of the bouquet, a sky-blue ribbon bow tying everything loosely together. Each blossom is shaded individually — the dog rose petals pale at the tips and deeper rose at the centre, the forget-me-nots picked out with the tiny yellow eye at each centre, the buttercup carrying the warmer yellow shadow that buttercups actually have on the underside of the petal. The leaves are the silvery sage-green of mid-century English botanical illustration rather than the more emerald commercial green of later decades. The same bouquet — slightly rearranged, not mirrored — sits at the centre of the saucer; the saucer painter rotated the bouquet so the dog rose drifts to the lower left and the sweet pea pushes up to the upper right. That difference between cup and saucer is the small tell of single-painter handwork rather than full transfer printing.

The base carries the Royal Albert gold-print crown stamp in the form the firm used from approximately 1927 to the mid-1940s — Royal Albert / Bone China / England arched around an ochre-gold crown with a central shield. This earlier gold-tone mark predates the standard black printed mark that Royal Albert moved to from the late 1930s onward; the gold version is therefore an earlier production window, less common in the secondary market than the more familiar post-war Royal Albert pieces. A small red painter's brush-stroke and a small blue quality-control dot sit beside the mark — the in-house marks of the painter who finished the bouquet and the inspector who passed the piece.
