Vintage Royal Albert Regal Series Teal Teacup & Saucer – Heavy Acid Gold Filigree, Turquoise Band, Bone China, England 1970s

A Royal Albert Regal Series teacup and saucer in teal / turquoise — the firm's high-end gilded line, here in its less-common turquoise colourway rather than the standard cobalt. A deep teal band wraps the lower body and floods the centre of the saucer, completely overlaid by heavy acid-etched gold filigree — dense leaf-and-vine tendrils that climb across both the teal band and the white upper body, gathering at the rim and the saucer edge. The interior of the cup carries a wide gilt acid-etched band; rim, scrolled handle, and pedestal foot are all heavily gilt.

Royal Albert, founded 1896 in Longton and holding the Royal Warrant since 1904, ran the Regal Series as a high-end collector line apart from its everyday cottage-rose patterns (Country Roses, Lavender Rose, Memory Lane). Regal Series pieces are marked with a red banner reading REGAL SERIES on the base alongside the standard Royal Albert / Bone China / England mark. The series was offered in several colourways — cobalt blue (most common), Empire green, burgundy / ruby, lavender, and teal / turquoise (this colourway — scarcer in the secondary market and chased by collectors completing the colour suite).

On the gilding. The gold here is acid-etched — the porcelain surface is chemically etched in a fine filigree pattern, gold paste is then applied and fired at high temperature, leaving the gold sitting in the etched relief with a velvety light-catching texture rather than the flat shine of a printed gold transfer. Acid-etched gilding sits near the top of the bone-china gilt hierarchy — above plain transfer-print gold, alongside (but distinct from) raised paste gold, and below only fully hand-enamelled work. It is the technique Royal Albert reserves for collector series.

A cup-and-saucer for the Royal Albert Regal Series collector building the colour suite, for the turquoise / peacock / Empire-blue interior, for the high-end English-bone-china cabinet (alongside Aynsley Orchard Gold, Coalport Athlone Blue, Mintons gilt-encrusted), or as a serious wedding / milestone-anniversary / sixtieth-birthday gift.
