Teacup & Saucer

Vintage Royal Albert Grandmother Teacup & Saucer – Spring Wildflowers, Gold Sentiment, Hampton Shape, Bone China, England 1960s

Tip the cup forward and the gilt script appears inside the rim — Grandmother, in gold, framed by a small wreath of stamped gilt roses and ribbons. On the outside of the cup: spring in miniature. A yellow primrose, a purple violet, a stem of blue grape hyacinth, a single pink tulip bud — printed and then hand-tinted, so each petal carries its own small flush of pigment. The saucer takes up the same little bouquet and lets it rest against the wavy scalloped rim, finished in 22K gilt.

This is from Royal Albert's Sentiment line — the gift series the maker ran through the 1960s, 70s and 80s, with patterns reserved for the women you give china to: Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Friend, Daughter. They are the kind of teacup that gets carried through a family — given at a wedding shower, used at Christmas tea, eventually set aside on the top shelf of the cabinet to be admired more than poured into. The Hampton shape — corset waist, scalloped rim, scroll handle dipped in gold — is the Royal Albert silhouette collectors learn to recognise on sight.

A particularly thoughtful gift for a grandmother — for a milestone birthday, a Mother's Day, or simply because she is the kind of grandmother who still puts the kettle on properly and lays out the saucers. Equally graceful for the Royal Albert sentiment-line collector building the full family set.
