Vintage Royal Albert Highland Thistle Tennis Snack Plate – Bone China, Scalloped Edge, Scotland Thistle Pattern, England 1960s

A figure-eight in bone china, sized to hold a teacup in one hand and a biscuit in the other. Royal Albert's Highland Thistle pattern scatters clusters of purple-magenta thistle heads and spiky green leaves across a clean white ground — Scotland's national flower rendered in the kind of sharp, saturated colour that Royal Albert built its reputation on. Some heads bloom in full purple; others sit as tight yellow-green buds waiting to open. No gold trim, no fussy borders — just thistles on white, as direct and unadorned as the Highlands themselves.

This tennis set plate (also called a snack plate or hostess plate) was designed for garden parties, afternoon teas, and the kind of relaxed entertaining where guests hold their own cup and plate in one hand. The smaller scalloped well cradles a teacup; the larger section carries sandwiches, scones, or petits fours. The shape dates to a moment when bone china left the formal table and followed people outdoors — onto the lawn, the terrace, the television tray.

Highland Thistle was produced by Royal Albert for only five years, from 1964 to 1969, making it one of the shorter-lived patterns in the company's catalogue and a genuinely scarce find for Royal Albert collectors. This listing is for the snack plate only — no cup is included. It works beautifully as a serving dish for appetizers, a vanity tray on a dressing table, or a decorative display piece for anyone with Scottish heritage or a fondness for botanical design.
