A Royal Albert teacup and saucer in the firm's Old English Roses pattern, in the black-ground vintage colourway — glossy mirror-black outside, white inside, the saucer following the same logic, with pink cabbage roses tumbling around both pieces over the black ground and the rim trimmed in 22K gilt. The cup is in Royal Albert's Crocus shape — rounded body, scalloped flared rim, scrolled handle with a small gilt accent at the curl, low pedestal foot.

Lift the cup up to the light and the painter's attention to the roses shows itself. The cabbage rose is transfer-printed first — Royal Albert built the pattern on a printed base — but a hand-tinter then came back over each rose to deepen the petal shadows toward the centre and lift the outer petal edges toward a paler pink, so each rose carries a real-feeling dimensionality rather than the flat single-colour-pass that a printed-only piece would carry. The leaves are a hand-tinted darker green underneath and brighter green along the upper veins, the same hand-pass that lifts the cup beyond a daily-use teacup into the named series cabinet tier.

The black ground itself is the technical achievement of this colourway. Both pieces carry the Royal Albert + Old English Roses identification — same maker, same named pattern — but the print version of the mark on the cup differs from the print version on the saucer in colour and detail, telling us they were made in different production runs across the pattern's long sixty-plus-year manufacturing window. This is a married set, in the vintage-china trade vocabulary: a cup and saucer matched by pattern and maker but assembled from two separate batches, almost certainly paired in a previous owner's estate or by a dealer reconstructing a broken pair. The pattern, colour, gilt work, and shape all match cleanly across the two pieces — only the base print differs.
