A single deep crimson rose, full open, set against a quiet ground of bone china — three or four pointed buds tucked behind it, each one veined with a thread of teal blue running through the leaves. Royal Albert's painters used that flash of teal on purpose: it lets a red rose read warmer, deeper, almost velvet in the light. The cup itself sits high on a heavy gilt foot, the body lifted by the soft vertical relief of the Hampton mould; the saucer carries the same rose again, smaller, in a relief-pleated frame. Founded in 1896 in Longton, Staffordshire and granted a Royal Warrant by Edward VII in 1904, Royal Albert built an empire on the English rose — Old Country Roses, Lavender Rose, Lady Carlyle, Moss Rose.
