Vintage Royal Doulton Powder Blue Teacup & Saucer – Platinum Rim, Prunus Blossom Saucer, Japandi Style, Bone China, England 1960s–1980s
A powder-blue cup the colour of a Hokusai sky, set on a white saucer where a single prunus branch leans across as if just blown in by a March wind — three or four red berries caught between the blossoms, the twigs traced in soft platinum-grey. Tip the cup forward and a tiny cluster of the same blue blossoms appears printed inside the rim, like a secret left for the drinker. No gold here, only platinum: cooler, quieter, more modern.
This is Royal Doulton at its mid-century best. Founded in 1815 and given a Royal Warrant in 1901, the Lambeth maker spent most of the twentieth century setting the bar for English bone china — but in the 1960s and 70s it leaned into a different mood: pared-back form, a single botanical gesture, a colour so even it reads almost like enamel. The result is closer in spirit to Japanese Imari and the Japandi interiors of today than to the heavy florals of Edwardian tea ware.
The cup itself is a low, broad mid-century shape — wider than it is tall, with a single D-loop handle marked with a band of platinum. It sits comfortably in either a delicate or larger hand and reads as quiet, modern, and surprisingly genderless: as much a piece for the man who takes his coffee in the afternoon as for the woman setting a Japandi table. Photographs beautifully against linen, pale wood, and unglazed ceramics.
A piece for someone building a calmer, cooler tea set — minimalist, mid-century, or Japandi-leaning — and a refreshing alternative to the rose-and-gilt convention. Equally graceful as a single-cup gift for a host who appreciates restraint.
