Teacup & Saucer

Vintage Royal Stafford Pink Lilac Teacup and Saucer – Floral Bouquet, Gold Baroque Scrollwork, Scalloped Rim, Bone China, England 1950s

Sold · archived in our gallery

A wash of pink-lilac — halfway between rose and lavender, shifting under the light — covers the upper cup and the saucer's wide border, meeting white bone china at a boundary of gold baroque scrollwork. The gilt band is dense with detail: acanthus curls, rococo volutes, and symmetrical leaf forms winding around both pieces in a continuous ornamental ribbon. Below that gilded equator the cup drops to plain white, and above it the colour deepens toward the scalloped gold rim. Turn the cup over in your hands and the design logic is clear — colour and gold on the outside, a surprise on the inside.

Lift the cup and the interior reveals a mixed floral bouquet sitting at the bottom: a large pink peony at centre stage, flanked by blue cornflowers, yellow and orange blooms, and clusters of purple and lilac — a full summer garden compressed into a circle of white bone china. The saucer carries the same bouquet at its centre, framed by the same pink-lilac border and gold scrollwork, creating a matched pair where colour meets colour and every angle offers something to look at.

Made by Royal Stafford — the trade name of Thomas Poole & Gladstone China Ltd, Longton, Staffordshire, producing bone china from 1845 through the late 20th century. Their coloured-ground teacups with baroque gilt borders are among the most visually distinctive pieces in English bone china, and the combination of bold colour, heavy ornament, and delicate floral interiors makes them immediately recognisable.
