Vintage Royal Tuscan Powder Blue Teacup & Saucer – Gold Lace Trim, Hand-Tinted Floral Interior, Fine Bone China, England 1960s
A teacup the soft powder blue of a sky just after dawn — set against the brightest gilt-lace border the painters could manage. Look closer: the upper third of the cup and the rim of the saucer are not painted gold but printed in fine gilt latticework, a series of small arches and pin-dots radiating outward, the kind of pattern Coalport and Aynsley reserved for their best lines. Royal Tuscan adapted the same style for an English middle market in the 1960s, and the result is what you have here — the look of an heirloom cup at a fraction of the heirloom price.
Tip the cup forward and the inside opens onto something different: a small hand-tinted bouquet of morning glory, pansy, and pink daisy on a pure white ground. So the cup reads two ways — powder blue and gold from across the room, intimate floral the moment you raise it to drink.
Royal Tuscan was the fine bone china line of R.H. & S.L. Plant Ltd in Longton, Staffordshire — produced from 1947 onward and absorbed into the Wedgwood Group in 1972. The mark on this set carries the "Member of the Wedgwood Group" line, dating it to the late 1960s or very early 1970s, with the painter's reference D3241 hand-written on the saucer back. The cup is footed in classic English corset shape, light enough in the hand that the bone china reads luminous when raised to the light.
A graceful piece for the collector who's past Royal Albert pink roses and looking at the cooler, quieter end of English bone china — for a Mother's Day, hostess, or housewarming gift, or as the blue counter-piece to a cottagecore tea shelf otherwise leaning pastel.
