Vintage Thomas Germany Cream Cottage Rose Trio – Cup Saucer Side Plate, Gold Handle, Hand Engraved Gilt, Bavaria Porcelain 1950s
A Thomas / Germany porcelain trio — teacup, saucer, and matching side / cake plate — in a cottage-rose spray on a soft pearl-cream ground. The rose composition is a Continental cottage-garden bouquet: pink cabbage roses with yellow asters, violets and small bluebells, and green leaves, set against the ivory pearl-glaze tone characteristic of mid-century Bavarian porcelain. The rim carries a hand-engraved gilt band with a fine secondary line, and the handle is a fully gilt scrolled curl — fully gold, not just edged in gold, a continental detail that sits the piece above the typical English bone-china range.
Thomas / Germany — founded 1903 in Marktredwitz, Bavaria by F. Thomas; acquired by Philip Rosenthal in 1908 and produced as Rosenthal's upper-tier Bavarian porcelain line through the twentieth century. The base reads in green ink: Hand engraved / T.K. Design Pat. Nr 90391 / Thomas / Germany, with a hand-written size number "80" — the Hand engraved notation is the maker's declaration that the gilt trim is hand-applied / acid-etched rather than purely transfer-printed. The mark format (no "Bavaria", no "US-Zone", no "Western Germany") places it in the Thomas / Germany mark window — most likely 1930s pre-war or 1950s early-post-war.
A trio for the Continental-porcelain collector building a Thomas / Bavaria / Rosenthal cabinet, for the cottage-rose / pearl-glaze interior, for the wedding-shower or anniversary gift (a trio reads more gift-substantial than a duo cup-and-saucer), or as a Mother's Day / sixtieth-birthday / housewarming present.
