Vintage Tuscan Bone China Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Plate – Sepia Photo Portrait, Rose Thistle Shamrock Wreath, England June 1953

Available

A Tuscan bone-china plate for the coronation of 2nd June 1953, designed like a handwritten greeting: H.M. Queen Elizabeth II unfurls across the top in flourished copperplate script, with June 2nd, Coronation and 1953 lettered below, all in warm sepia brown against the maker's famously white bone china.

At the centre, a sepia photographic portrait of the young Queen glancing over her shoulder beneath the Diamond Diadem, in the manner of Dorothy Wilding's official accession photographs — the images that fed the stamps and the finer souvenirs of that summer. Around her, a wreath of Tudor roses, Scottish thistles and Irish shamrocks; count the flowers and you will notice Wales' daffodil politely missing, as heraldic convention of the day had it — a small connoisseur's wink on an otherwise sweetly straightforward plate. A Tudor crown sits above, and the scalloped rim carries a hand-brushed gold edge.

The green backstamp — Tuscan Fine English Bone China, Made in England — is the mark of R.H. & S.L. Plant of Longton, the family firm that advertised "the whitest bone china" and later joined the Wedgwood group in 1966, when Tuscan became Royal Tuscan. This plate is that house in its independent prime.

At 8.25 inches it displays easily on a stand or a small wall group — for the coronation collector, the Tuscan and Royal Tuscan shelf, or anyone drawn to sepia photographs and old script.
