Antique Victorian "A Present" Souvenir Cup and Saucer – Green Lustre Glaze, Gold Relief Fruit, Beaded Rim, Porcelain, Germany 1890s
Gold script spells "A Present" across the front in heavy Gothic lettering — a message that has not changed its meaning in a hundred and thirty years. Around it, a cluster of raised gold berries and sculpted leaves stands out from the cup wall in actual relief, thick enough to cast shadows, their surfaces coated in bright gilding that still catches light like metal.
The body beneath is covered in a celadon-green lustre glaze — a watery, opalescent wash that shifts between jade and mint as the cup turns. At the lip, a band of magenta beading sits above a second band of cobalt blue, both moulded into the porcelain like miniature pearl strings. Inside, the cup is plain white. The saucer repeats the green lustre across its full face, framing a small white centre.
This is a Victorian souvenir cup — one of tens of thousands produced in German porcelain factories, principally in Silesia and Thuringia, for the British market between roughly 1880 and 1910. They were sold at seaside resorts, awarded as prizes at fairgrounds, and carried home as gifts — the phrase "A Present" served as both label and intention. Some bore a town name; this one was left general, ready for any occasion. The exuberance of the decoration — moulded fruit, multi-colour beading, lustre glaze — packed maximum spectacle into a demitasse-sized frame. Each cup was individually hand-glazed, so no two are exactly alike.
