Vintage Wedgwood Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Plate – Royal Guardsmen & Blue Silhouette, Gothic Rose Window Design, England 1977

Available

A Wedgwood plate for the Silver Jubilee of 1977 — the summer Britain hung out the bunting and held over a hundred thousand street parties — designed like a Gothic rose window in red, white and blue.

At its heart, the Queen in cobalt-blue silhouette, the profile familiar from every stamp and coin of the reign, ringed by the Garter motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense and Dieu et Mon Droit. Eight pointed arches radiate outward, their blue grounds flowered with thistles and pinks, and between them stand ten figures of the royal guard on parade — bearskin-hatted Grenadiers, a mounted-regiment Life Guard in cuirass, Yeomen of the Guard in Tudor scarlet, drummers in state dress. Around the rim, the national anthem runs a full unbroken circle: God Save Our Gracious Queen · Long Live Our Noble Queen · Send Her Victorious, Happy and Glorious · Long to Reign Over Us.

The body is Wedgwood's cream-white Queen's Ware — a name with its own royal pedigree, granted after Queen Charlotte ordered Josiah Wedgwood's creamware in 1765, in what may be history's earliest royal product endorsement. Two centuries later the same body returned to celebrate a queen's twenty-five years. The dedicated backstamp reads Royal Silver Jubilee 1952–1977, Wedgwood, Made in England — To Commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

At a generous 10.5 inches it hangs well — a royalcore wall piece, a jubilee-series anchor, or a red-white-and-blue statement for anyone who loves a Beefeater.
