Vintage Royal Bone China Mug Pair – Collector's Series Botanical Pink Roses, Stained Glass Gilt Border, Matched Set, Thailand 1990s

Available

Two things worth saying plainly about this pair. First: "Royal Bone China" is a trademark, not an English pottery — the base reads Thailand, and this listing says so up front, because the name is designed to be mistaken for the Royal Albert / Royal Doulton family and shouldn't be. Second: that origin is more interesting than it sounds. Bone china was an English invention of the 1790s — porcelain clay cut with about half its weight in bone ash, for strength and translucency — and for two centuries it was England's signature. The formula was never secret, though; by the 1980s the craft had followed costs east, and Thailand became one of the places where bone china for the English-speaking world was actually fired. Hold one of these to a lamp and the rim glows exactly as it should.

What they spent the money on is the decoration. The roses are drawn botanically rather than decoratively — full blooms, half-open buds, and, unusually, rose hips gone to seed, with veined leaves and thorned stems crowding the white almost out of sight. And around the rim runs the detail that lifts them: a band of stained-glass geometry, diamonds and arches in blue, green, gold and pink, outlined in gilt — the tail end of the 1990s revival of Art Nouveau and Arts-and-Crafts taste, when Tiffany lamps and church-window motifs were back in every catalogue.

The base names them as Roses, one of a "Collector's series of four designs" — a 1990s marketing device, and a harmless one.

A matched pair, immaculate: bright decal, unworn gilt, no chips, no cracks, no tea staining. Sold as the pair — and, unlike the fragile old English cups on the shelf above, these are meant to be used.

The base carries the maker's printed mark; the wording — especially “England” versus “Made in England” versus “Bone China” — together with any pattern or registration number are the main clues to its age.
